Healthy Ways to Manage Your Panic Attack

If you suffer from panic attacks, you know that they don’t always come at convenient times. The physical symptoms can be scary and frustrating: racing heart, sweating, shaking, and more. Finding healthy ways to manage your panic attacks is vital because it will help reduce the severity of these episodes and keep them from happening as often in the future.

Here are some tips for managing a panic attack when one hits:

  • Take deep breaths
When you feel an attack coming on, try taking a few minutes to breathe deeply and slowly to help yourself relax. You can do this anywhere—when you’re alone or with others.
  • Use affirmations
A positive statement such as “I know this is going to be okay” can help you stay focused and calm when the anxiety starts to take over.
  • Ask for support
Talk with an expert in psychotherapy in Massachusetts about what’s been happening and what steps need to be taken next. Even if medication isn’t necessary (which isn’t always the case), sometimes just talking through things with a professional can make all the difference in how well-managed your symptoms are going forward.

You don’t have to let panic attacks control your life. They are just signals from the nervous system that something unexpected has happened and needs extra attention and support from family, friends, and providers of mental health services.
